Jan-Mar 2021 reads

Happy new year, abortion friends!

What are we reading in the first quarter of 2021, you ask? There’s been a slight shake up- alas, Eighth Day has been difficult to procure in some countries! We’ve moved some of the books around and our reads for Jan-March 2021 are:

January 2021

We’ll be reading Sharon Biggs Waller’s YA book Girls on the Verge in January 2021, discussing it on Feb 8th 2021 (tbc).

We’re interested to see how it compares to UNpregnant- as a YA novel set in the USA, and- as the blurb hints- as a story featuring an abortion friend AND a road trip!

February 2021

Since we moved Girls on the Verge up to replace Eighth Day, we’ve added Marian Keyes’ The Break for our February read. We’re scheduled to discuss it on March 3rd 2021 (tbc).

Our first book set in Ireland, it was published in 2017 before the 8th amendment was repealed & reviews say it ‘shines a harsh light on fear and silence’ surrounding abortion. Marian Keyes’ books were apparently burnt in protest of her support for repealing the 8th!

March 2021

Our March read- to be discussed in April (date/times tbc) is Leni Zumas’ dystopian Red Clocks.

Inspired by Atwood’s Handmaid’s Tale, Red Clocks taps into the ever-present anxiety of anti-abortion laws (“personhood laws”) that we're seeing flourish in the USA and across the world.

Make sure you’re signed up so you receive all the details- we’ll also be running polls & firming up the book choices for Apr-Sept 2021, so keep an eye out for that on twitter!

And, as always: we’re happy to receive suggestions + recommendations!
